A healthy car battery is vital for a smooth-running vehicle. It provides the power to start your engine and supports all the electrical components. While some batteries are labelled “maintenance-free,” even these can benefit from a little TLC to extend their lifespan and avoid unexpected breakdowns.

1. Cleanliness is Key: Corrosion and grime buildup on the battery terminals can hinder its ability to conduct electricity. Make it a habit to check the terminals every 6 months. If you see any white, crusty deposits, remove them using a baking soda and water solution and a wire brush (for the terminal posts only, not the battery itself).
2. Tighten Up: Ensure the battery cables are firmly secured to the terminals. Loose connections can also lead to starting problems. Use a wrench or socket set to tighten the cable clamps, but avoid over-tightening.
